A chronicle of the musical career of Louis ("Satchmo") Armstrong, using clips of the jazz trumpeter/singer's performances as well as interviews with him and fellow musicians. During this program, the following aspects of Armstrong's life are explored: his formative years in New Orleans; his world tour from 1955 to 1956; how he spends his free nights while on tour; and his visit to the Gold Coast of Africa.

Peter Ustinov and Peter Jones play themselves as two characters in a London car journey failing to find a location known as Copthorne Avenue. Ustinov and Jones also portrayed various characters they meet on the journey, from which much of the show's comedy was derived. The show was improvised on tape and then edited for broadcast by Frank Muir and Denis Norden, who also sometimes took part.
