1980 saw the Moscow Olympics boycott, the Iranian embassy siege, Margaret Thatcher lady's not for turning speech, the shock death of John Lennon and the first images of Saturn. On the lighter side, Pac-Man, the ZX80 home computer and the Mini-Metro were launched, Britain's first nudist beach opened and we listened to ABBA, Pink Floyd and The Police.

In 1982, Britain went to war over an island of sheep, Mary Whitehouse complained about the Romans, the IRA bombed London and ET phoned home. Music included such stone-cold classics as 'Come on Eileen', 'Eye of the Tiger' and 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?'.

In 1989, the Berlin Wall came down, Salman Rushdie got fatwa'd, Hillsborough claimed the lives of 96 football supporters and Ceaucescu was publicly executed. On the good side, Black Box were 'Ride on Time', Soul II Soul brought us 'Back to Life' and Cher wondered 'If I Could Turn Back Time'.

1981 focuses on the year Charles and Di got married, riots raged across the UK and attempts were made on the lives of the Queen, the President of the USA and the Pope.

1990 saw Mrs Thatcher resign and the Poll Tax riots. Everyone was worried about Mad Cow disease and England went out on penalties in the World Cup semi final. English and French Channel Tunnel workers met in the middle and Madonna instructed everyone to 'Vogue'.

Reagan joked about bombing Russia, Scargill took on Thatcher, Torvill and Dean won the Olympics with their Bolero, Bob Geldof created Band Aid, Christian extremists blamed Aids on God's wrath, and Frankie told them all to Relax.

In 1994, the Channel Tunnel opened, Gillian Taylforth sued the Sun, Ayrton Senna was killed, Mandela became South Africa's first black president, OJ Simpson led the cops on a high-speed chase through LA, and Wet Wet Wet held the top pop spot for 15 weeks.
