As the autumn light bathes Longmeadow, Monty is harvesting pumpkins in time for Halloween, adding a berberis to his orchard border and planting out strawberries.

Autumn is the best time to get trees and shrubs in the ground, and he plants three that would do well in a shady spot. He’s also got ideas for brightening up a lawn and shares advice on how to get an early crop of onions.

Frances Tophill is back at Damson Farm, lending a hand with autumn jobs in the garden. She learns of a clever recipe for making an architectural compost cake, plants a container with evergreens and spring bulbs, and takes hard wood cuttings from a tree with beautiful berries.

At Longmeadow, Monty is full steam ahead creating a new woodland garden from scratch. He plants up some native grasses and adds in hellebores for a colourful spring display. He also prunes a climbing rose, harvests kale and winter veg, and pots up hyacinth bulbs.
